Description
Elastic sewing thread, or shirring elastic, is a flexible elastic cord used in the bobbin of a sewing machine to create gathered and stretchy details on garments. It is commonly used for shirring, smocking effects, ruffles, and fitted sections on lightweight fabrics.
To use it, gently wind the elastic thread onto the bobbin by hand without stretching it. Use regular sewing thread on the top of the machine and set the machine to a longer straight stitch. Sew parallel rows across the fabric without pulling or stretching the fabric as it feeds through the machine.
After sewing, applying light steam can help the elastic retract and tighten the gathers, creating the desired shirred effect.
Ideal for:
- Shirred and gathered garments
- Smocked effects
- Ruffled details
- Stretchy waistlines and fitted sections
- Lightweight fabrics
- DIY sewing and garment making
